Ford is embarking on an exciting venture in the United Kingdom by commencing testing of fuel-cell E-Transit commercial vans. This innovative approach holds promising potential for addressing specific niche delivery requirements.

While battery electric powertrains have proven suitable for many local delivery operations with short distances and convenient overnight recharging, there are instances where extended range, increased equipment capacity, and heavier loads necessitate alternative solutions. Ford's exploration of hydrogen fuel-cell technology aims to cater to these unique demands.

The advantages of utilizing fuel cells in delivery vans become evident when considering heavy loads and the weight implications of batteries. As the battery capacity increases for longer ranges, payload capacity decreases due to the added weight. This becomes a significant challenge when transporting hefty products over long distances. Moreover, faster refueling and the ability to power additional equipment make fuel cells a valuable asset.

Although Ford has not disclosed detailed specifications for the fuel-cell test vans, we know that they employ a fuel cell stack for generating electricity and a hydrogen tank. Presumably, the drive motor remains the same, providing an impressive 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It remains uncertain whether the vans will retain the existing 126-mile battery pack or employ a smaller one to optimize weight.

To develop this technology, Ford has collaborated with several notable partners. BP spearheads the efforts in hydrogen infrastructure and production, Cambustion contributes to the fuel cell system, Viritech specializes in hydrogen storage, and Cygnet Texkimp manufactures the carbon fiber hydrogen storage tanks.

Over the next three years, Ford plans to test eight fuel-cell E-Transit vans in six-month intervals. However, the company has not confirmed if it intends to introduce fuel-cell E-Transits into production. This exciting endeavor showcases Ford's commitment to exploring diverse solutions and revolutionizing the commercial delivery sector.
