Autoliv, a major supplier of car safety equipment, has announced that it will start producing a new motorcycle airbag in the first quarter of 2025.

Autoliv aims to improve safety for motorcycle riders, as they have not benefited from advancements in vehicle safety as much as car drivers and passengers. Company's motorcycle airbag system, called the bag-on-bike airbag, is designed to significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in frontal crashes for powered two-wheeler riders.

The airbag system consists of an airbag module with a gas generator, an optional crash sensor, and an electronic control unit (ECU) with an algorithm to determine when to deploy the airbag. The bag-on-bike airbag is meant to complement existing safety systems like ABS and ASR on motorcycles and scooters.

Autoliv has conducted extensive virtual simulations and collaborations with road safety organization MIROS to develop and test the airbag technology. The company is also working with an Italian helmet manufacturer Airoh to develop airbag helmet technology for motorcycle riders.

"Our goal is to offer a complete and cost-efficient bag-on-bike system to facilitate the introduction of this technology for a wide variety of motorcycles. The Autoliv bag-on-bike airbag system will include an airbag and an optional in-house-developed electronic crash sensor to complete the system," said Jordi Lombarte, Chief Technical Officer, Autoliv.
