Lamborghini Urus, a popular performance SUV, will transition to a hybrid-only model by late 2024, replacing the current internal combustion engine (ICE) versions.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar the PHEV version of Sant'Agata Bolognese's immensely popular performance SUV will replace the current versions by late 2024ю The hybridized Urus will be based on a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain, making it Lamborghini's second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) after the Revuelto.

Winkelmann, cites increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the high cost of making large-displacement combustion engines compliant as reasons for embracing hybrid technology. The Urus PHEV will continue until the end of the decade when a second-generation, electric-only model is expected to launch.

Winkelmann predicts a challenging future for ICE vehicles, particularly in the European Union, with high taxes driving people to switch to electric vehicles (EVs). Lamborghini's head honcho went on to add synthetic fuels could be a solution just to keeping existing vehicles alive, thus indirectly saying the future of car production will be about battery-powered EVs.

Lamborghini's first fully electric model is expected to be a 2+2 gran tourer arriving in 2028, with a concept car showcasing the technology beforehand.
