The YouTube app is part of Audi's Multimedia Interface (MMI) and is available for download through the infotainment system's built-in app store.
The addition of YouTube allows Audi vehicle owners to watch videos during charging stops, driving breaks, or waiting for someone while the vehicle is parked. The German carmaker claims the app works like it does on a smartphone. Of note, one can only play videos via YouTube when the vehicle is parked, which is obviously for safety reasons.
Audi is the first brand within the Volkswagen Group to introduce this technology, which was jointly developed with VW's Cariad. Other brands under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella are set to follow suit.
Audi's app store also offers other third-party apps such as Amazon Music and Spotify, with the ability to download and access various apps directly through the MMI without needing a smartphone.
Audi added that video streaming will be available in select models in the summer of 2023, with other brands under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella to follow. Audi models will continue to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Other car manufacturers, such as Volvo and Polestar, have also introduced the YouTube app in their vehicles, but like Audi, video playback is restricted to when the vehicle is stationary. Mercedes-Benz has taken a similar approach by integrating apps like Angry Birds and TikTok into the new E-Class through its dedicated app store called Mercedes Me.
