Initially hitting the market in Latin America, the Kardian will make its first appearance in Rio de Janeiro before rolling out in other regions. According to Renault, the Kardian represents "the beginning of the brand’s new wave of products in non-European markets."
“The All-new Renault Kardian is the latest in our range of model names and represents the Renaulution on the international stage. We pronounce it the French way, because Renault is a French brand – a bit like the French Touch,” said Sylvia Dos Santos, Model-naming Strategy Manager within the Renault Global Marketing Department.
Nevertheless, the roots of the All-new Renault Kardian’s name come from the English language. On first listen, the name evokes the word “guardian”, symbolising protection and strength. Its strong consonants – K, R and D – reinforce that impression. But the name also conjures another strong image. Sylvia explains, “what’s interesting about the Renault Kardian is how it evokes dynamic agility. It makes you think of cardio – sport, momentum and adrenaline.”
While specifics about the new vehicle are still scarce, it's possible that it could be Renault’s take on the Dacia Sandero Stepway. Dacia introduced a revamped Sandero for the 2021 model year in 2020, featuring the more rugged Stepway model. The Stepway version has characteristics like roof racks, bumper-integrated skid plates, a heightened ground clearance, plastic wheel arches, and additional trim pieces.
In conjunction with the announcement of the Kardian's upcoming October release, Renault offered a sneak peek of the vehicle. The teaser showcased the SUV's word mark located below the Renault emblem and provided a fleeting look at elements such as the taillight, rear hatch, and roof spoiler. However, the overall design remains largely concealed, though it appears to bear resemblance to the Sandero.
As of now, there are no known details concerning the powertrain for Renault's new vehicle. Given that Dacia has not yet incorporated electrified options into the Sandero, it's unlikely that the Kardian will feature any electrified powertrains.
