Operating nationwide in Germany, the online supermarket Flaschenpost is transitioning its vehicle fleet to electric. By the end of 2023, about half of all delivery routes will be carried out using EVs.

Flaschenpost has purchased 1,000 electric vehicles from various manufacturers and is building its own charging infrastructure at all 33 warehouse locations.

In some locations, including Münster and Berlin, half of all deliveries are already fully electric. By gradually converting its delivery fleet, Flaschenpost aims to further reduce its ecological footprint and come closer to its climate goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 42 percent by 2030 compared to the base year 2021.

"The acquisition of 1,000 electric vehicles is a significant milestone in achieving our climate goals," said Stephan Zech, Head of Fleet Management at Flaschenpost. "By the end of the year, we can serve our customers in an even more sustainable manner."

Despite supply bottlenecks for electronic components, resulting waiting periods, and challenges related to power availability for setting up the charging infrastructure, the Flaschenpost team has managed to achieve this crucial step. "We thank all project partners for their support; without them, we could not have overcome these challenges," Zech added.

A portion of the investment is supported by the "Directive on the Promotion of Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicles with Alternative, Climate-Friendly Drives and Associated Fuel and Charging Infrastructure" (KsNI), funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport with a total of 7.6 million euros.

In addition to the switch to electric mobility, efficient route planning and the increased use of green electricity are Flaschenpost's key climate measures.

With alternative delivery options, Flaschenpost aims to further facilitate consumers' access to more climate-conscious consumption. The "Green Delivery Window" transparently informs customers at the time of ordering about delivery times when multiple addresses in the nearby area will be served anyway. This bundles orders both in time and location, reducing the length of routes.

Today, Flaschenpost's delivery routes, planned with their own custom-developed artificial intelligence, already alleviate road traffic. Up to ten individual trips to the supermarket are replaced by just one delivery route.
