The new ninth-generation Volkswagen Passat has been revealed. It will only be available as a wagon in Europe, and won't be sold at all in America. The car will be manufactured in Slovakia next to the Skoda Superb.

Built on the updated MQB Evo platform, which it shares with the soon-to-be-released next-gen Tiguan and Golf Mk8 facelift, the 2024 Passat is notably larger than its predecessor, the B8 model. Its length now measures 4,917 millimeters (193.5 inches), a significant increase of 144 mm (5.7 inches) over the previous version. The width has also expanded by 20 mm (0.8 inches) to 1,852 mm (72.9 inches), whereas the height remains almost the same at 1,506 mm (59.2 inches). The wheelbase has seen a 50 mm (1.97 in) extension to 2,841 mm (111.8 in).

In terms of design, the styling is more evolutionary, taking cues from VW's electric ID range. For instance, the recently sighted VW ID.7 Variant has a slightly more modern look, but the resemblance to the new Passat is clear. Exterior options will vary depending on trim levels like Passat, Business, Elegance, and R-Line. Wheel sizes will go up to 19 inches, and the vehicle features newly engineered matrix LED headlights and dynamic rear LEDs, complete with a light bar.

Inside, the design is a radical shift from the old Passat B8, as most traditional controls have been removed. The majority of functionalities are accessible through a 12.9-inch touchscreen, even in the base model. For an extra fee, you can upgrade the infotainment screen to 15 inches. A 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster comes standard, marking a departure from the analog dials available in the older model.

By relocating the gear selector to the steering column, engineers have created more room between the seats for added storage, similar to the upcoming next-gen Skoda Superb. Additional features include a new left-side switch for controlling turn signals and wipers, as well as optional heated, ventilated, and massaging seats with 14-way electric adjustment for enhanced front-seat comfort.

The increased dimensions have not only improved legroom but also added 40 liters (1.41 cubic feet) of cargo space, bringing the total to 690 liters (24.3 cubic feet) when the rear seats are upright. Folding down the back seats boosts this capacity to 1,920 liters (67.8 cubic feet), which is 140 liters (4.9 cubic feet) more than the outgoing Passat Variant. In fact, the new cargo space is now on par with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Under the hood, the engine choices are diverse, including a mild-hybrid gasoline engine for the first time in Passat's lineage. You can opt for either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, as well as 6-speed and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. The 2024 Passat PHEV also supports DC fast-charging at 50 kW, allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 25 minutes. With a full battery and a full 45-liter (11.9-gallon) gas tank, the driving range is approximately 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
