The Volkswagen Group has announced that production of the electric VW ID.3 and its sibling, the Cupra Born, will be suspended for the first two weeks of October. The reason is the declining demand for both models.

A spokesman for the carmaker has revealed that the current market situation has prompted VW to suspend production at its Zwickau plant, which assembles both the ID.3 and the Born, from October 2 to October 13. VW's Dresden plant also builds the ID.3, and production there will be suspended from October 2 to October 16.

It is not yet clear how many units VW will lose due to the production pause. Reuters notes that the company has refused to reveal how many employees will be affected by the production halt.

Interestingly, it was recently revealed that VW has plans to completely cease production at its Dresden plant. The plant has been in operation since 2002, and while it is not yet clear when production will end there, it is understood that closing the plant could save VW as much as €20 million ($21 million) per year.

Workers at VW's Zwickau plant have also recently been affected by changing market conditions. The brand recently announced that it would not be able to proceed with its plan to offer 269 permanent contracts to temporary workers. VW attributed the decision to tough market conditions, a decline in demand for electric vehicles, and increased competition from Chinese-made electric vehicles.
