A number of new 2023 BMW 7 Series models, including the all-electric i7, are being recalled in the United States due to a defect with the front windshield wipers.

An investigation by the automaker found that a change in the hardness of the material used in the wiper lever could cause the connection between the wiper lever and the knurled wiper motor shaft to loosen. Over time, it could stop working completely.

BMW notes that if the connection becomes loose, there will be a reduced amount of torque transmitted from the wiper motor axle. This would reduce the wipers' effectiveness under high stress, especially in heavy rain or snow. Obviously, this is a hazard that could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that 3,820 vehicles are affected. These include 3,569 BMW 740i and 760i xDrive models built between October 13, 2022 and January 26, 2023, as well as 251 examples of the 2023 BMW i7 xDrive60 built between the same dates.

BMW notified dealers of the recall on September 20, 2023, and will begin notifying owners on November 10. Dealers will resolve the issue by simply inspecting and, if necessary, replacing the windshield wiper system.
