Numerous users report that the devices on the wireless charging pads in BMWs suddenly go into recovery mode. After a restart, the NFC chip is said to be inoperable, MacRumors writes, citing its own forum.
This problem has potentially painful consequences. In an iPhone, the NFC chip powers features such as Apple Pay and digital car keys. Affected users receive a "Could not set up Apple Pay" error message in the Wallet app, and there appears to be no way to fix the problem. Some customers say Apple replaced their iPhone after confirming the NFC chip had failed, but the replacement iPhone is vulnerable to the same issue, so there is currently no permanent fix.
While the complaints so far have come from iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is possible that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also affected. As a result, owners of any iPhone 15 model should proceed with caution until this issue is resolved.
It's still unclear what the exact cause of the problem is, how many customers are affected, and which BMW models are involved. Neither Apple nor BMW have officially commented on the NFC and wireless charging issue.
