Volvo EM90 made an early appearance in China as part of its homologation process. The official premiere is scheduled to take place on November 12.

Every car sold in China has to gain clearance from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. During this approval process, pictures of upcoming models are released on the MIIT website before they hit the market. This has happened with the EM90, Volvo's inaugural minivan. A few images revealing the entire exterior have been released weeks before its official introduction.

As expected, the electric minivan closely resembles the Zeekr 009. The pillars look the same, and the side mirrors, door handles, and fender cameras are similarly placed. However, the EM90 sports a new front end with distinct headlights to align it with other Volvo models. It ditches the flashy grille found on the original model, replacing it with a body-colored panel featuring small cutouts that likely illuminate.

The back of the minivan has been tweaked to better reflect Volvo's branding. Still, you can identify it by the shape of the tailgate and the camera location below the license plate. Though less eye-catching than the 009, this is Volvo's first step into the minivan market, which is a big shift away from their usual lineup of SUVs, sedans, and wagons.

Initial specs have been released along with these photos. Per MIIT data, the 2024 Volvo EM90 measures 5206 mm (205 inches) in length, 2024 mm (79.6 in) in width, and 1859 mm (73.1 in) in height. Available wheel options include 19 and 20 inches for this six-seat electric family vehicle, weighing in at a substantial 2,763 kg (6,091 lbs).

The wheelbase is the same as the Zeekr 009 at 3205 mm (126 in) from front to rear axle. Geely's luxury brand, founded in 2021, also offers a more luxurious 2+2 seating arrangement. It remains to be seen whether Volvo will release a similar option, given that competitors like the Buick GL8 and Lexus LM offer two-seat rear configurations.

Unlike these competitors, which use traditional engines, the EM90 is confirmed to have a rear-mounted electric motor generating 200 kilowatts, or 268 horsepower. It's worth noting that the Zeekr 009 offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant with 536 hp that can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.5 seconds.

While battery details for the EM90 haven't been disclosed, the Zeekr 009 comes with a CATL lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery. This 140-kWh pack delivers 822 km (511 miles) of range based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), with a smaller 116-kWh option providing 702 km (436 miles).

The EM90 will make its official debut on November 12, when preorders open in China. The minivan, described as a "Scandinavian living room on the move," will be produced there.
