Kia Australia is taking steps to extend the lifespan of batteries in its electric vehicles by forming a collaboration with a domestic company that specializes in battery reuse, repurposing, and recycling.

The automaker has teamed up with Infinitev, a company that offers a range of solutions for managing the lifecycle of batteries. When a battery in one of Kia's electric vehicles begins to show signs of reduced performance, Infinitev initiates a SafetyCheck, conducting both physical and electrochemical evaluations for safety.

Following this safety assessment, Infinitev engineers employ their specialized HealthCheck tools to individually assess the modules within a battery pack. These modules are then classified as either 'A grade', suitable for creating new batteries, 'B grade', fit for battery energy storage systems, or 'C grade', designated for recycling through Infinitev's partner networks to reclaim valuable materials.

“We are proud to have a holistic solution that addresses the environmental concerns associated with electric vehicle batteries,” Infinitev general manager Dickson Leow said. “Our innovative reuse approach ensures that the transition to a circular economy is not only sustainable but also reduces waste and preserves valuable resources. Through responsible battery management, we can accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and build a greener Australia.”

The timeline for the initiation of battery assessments for locally sold EVs hasn't been disclosed by either company. However, considering the first Kia electric vehicle was released in Australia in 2021, it might take several years before the batteries are repurposed, reused, or recycled.

“We are currently in the very early stages of developing a solution tailored to Kia customers that will allow their electric vehicle batteries to be refurbished instead of discarded,” Kia Australia chief executive officer Damien Meredith added. “What happens to an electric vehicle battery at the end of its life is an important consideration when it comes to EV buyers, so this is a very significant program.”
