Last year, Toyota announced it wouldn't launch its 5th-generation Prius PHEV in the U.K. due to strong competition from SUVs. Now, the automaker has reportedly reversed that decision.

When Toyota first took the wraps off its fifth-generation Prius, the car garnered considerable attention for its performance capabilities and futuristic design. UK consumers were naturally let down when they found out they wouldn't have the option to purchase the hybrid. But, it seems the tide has turned.

After being removed from the UK market last year, the Prius is set to make a return. While the car is already available in other parts of Europe, Toyota originally decided against a UK release in 2023, citing the country's affinity for SUVs and crossovers as the reason.

However, increased demand for hybrid vehicles has convinced the company to reintroduce the new Prius in the UK, according to Autocar. The exact reasons for this shift in strategy remain unclear, but it's likely to be good news for UK buyers interested in fuel-efficient, stylish vehicles.

Globally, the new Prius comes in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. In Europe, however, only the plug-in hybrid variant is offered. This model pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a front-mounted electric motor, delivering 223 hp (164 kW). Its 13.6 kWh battery enables the car to travel up to 85 km (53 miles) solely on electric power.

This fifth-generation Prius has significant enhancements over its predecessor, including a focus on improved interior materials and technology, making it a more comfortable space for owners.

While these features make the car more appealing, they also bump up its price. The starting price stands at €45,290 (£39,536 / $48,055 USD at current exchange rates) in Germany, making it a pricier option for a vehicle of its size. Nevertheless, Toyota appears confident that the renewed interest in hybrids will stimulate sales.
