Lucid Air's "RangeXchange" feature now allows owners to use their vehicles as portable power banks to assist other EVs with depleted batteries.

To enable this feature, Lucid Air owners in the U.S. can purchase an adapter that forms a cord with two plug ends and update their vehicle's software. This marks the debut of Lucid's bidirectional charging technology, known as the "Wunderbox."

The Wunderbox facilitates energy flow from the Lucid Air's battery at a rate of up to 9.6 kW. The added range it provides to other EVs may vary depending on the specific vehicle but is estimated by Lucid to be between 24 and 40 miles per hour. This feature can be especially helpful in getting a stranded EV to the nearest charging station for faster recharging.

Lucid designed the Wunderbox in-house, and while it currently serves as a means to share power from the Air's battery, it has the potential for other applications in the future. These potential applications include vehicle-to-home backup power, time-of-use (TOU) optimization, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power, as stated by Erich Bach, Lucid's chief engineer.

The activation of this feature will be accomplished through an over-the-air update, but customers will need to visit Lucid's website to purchase the required cable adapter. Pricing details for the adapter have not been disclosed, but it should be compatible with charging any EV, including Teslas, as suggested by Lucid's product image.
