Hyundai Motor North America recently introduced the 2025 IONIQ 5 N, an electrified sports vehicle, at a pre-show event for AutoMobility LA. The IONIQ 5 N is a pivotal model for Hyundai's N brand, marking its first venture into electrification.

Vision and Technology Behind IONIQ 5 N

The IONIQ 5 N is a fusion of Hyundai's N motorsport technologies and the standard IONIQ 5's E-GMP, showcasing innovations like the 'Rolling Labs' projects (RM20e, RN22e, N Vision 74). It embodies the brand's performance pillars: 'Corner Rascal,' 'Racetrack Capability,' and 'Everyday Sportscar.' José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized the N brand's role in advancing technology, highlighting the IONIQ 5 N as a leap in electrified performance.

Engineering

The vehicle boasts dual-motor AWD, rally-inspired handling, and 42 additional welding points, enhancing its rigidity. Notable features include a strengthened body structure, reinforced motor and battery mounting, and 21-inch forged aluminum wheels. The steering system has been fortified, and the N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system refined, offering a more direct steering experience.

Driving Dynamics

Hyundai has introduced the N Pedal and N Drift Optimizer to improve handling and drift capabilities. The N Pedal enhances turn-in behavior and throttle sensitivity, while the N Drift Optimizer balances vehicle controls for optimal drift angles. The IONIQ 5 N also features variable torque distribution and an e-LSD (electronic limited-slip differential) for enhanced cornering.

Electric Propulsion

The electric propulsion system includes a two-stage inverter and a new 84 kWh battery, producing an estimated 641 horsepower with N Grin Boost3 engaged. The system also features N Launch Control4 and Track SOC for efficient battery management. The N Race feature allows drivers to choose between 'Endurance' and 'Sprint' modes for strategic energy consumption.

Braking System

The IONIQ 5 N introduces N-tuned brakes, Hyundai's most powerful system to date, with large diameter rotors and monobloc calipers. The regenerative braking system has been recalibrated for enhanced performance, complemented by N Brake Regen, designed specifically for the demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Embracing the Everyday Sportscar Concept

The vehicle features the N e-shift and N Active Sound+ functions, simulating the shift feel and powertrain notes of an ICE vehicle. This approach aims to provide a more engaging and sensory driving experience, differentiating the IONIQ 5 N from other EVs.

Design and Comfort for the Track and Everyday Use

The IONIQ 5 N boasts a sporty design with performance-enhancing elements like a wing-type rear spoiler and wider proportions for aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, it features N-branded elements and bucket seats designed for track driving. The vehicle also offers practical features like USB-C connectivity and a wireless charger.

Sustainable Materials and Innovative Features

Sustainable materials are used throughout the interior, including recyclable door garnish and eco-processed leather. The IONIQ 5 N also includes the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)5 capability, allowing the use of the car's battery to power external devices.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is scheduled to hit Hyundai dealerships in March 2024.
