Stellantis recently launched the "Sustainera Circular Economy Hub" at its Mirafiori plant in Turin. This state-of-the-art facility, which represents an investment of 40 million euros, covers an area of 73,000 square meters and is focused on the circular economy.

The hub's primary aim is to extend the lifespan of automotive parts and vehicles. It is divided into four sections: Remanufacturing, Sorting Centre, Vehicle Reconditioning, and Vehicle Dismantling. The facility currently employs 170 workers, with plans to expand to about 550 by 2025.

  • Remanufacturing: This section is dedicated to refurbishing used or defective components, including motors, gearboxes, and high-voltage batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), to meet original OEM specifications. The goal is to manage over 50,000 remanufactured parts by 2025, increasing to 150,000 by 2030.
  • Sorting Centre: Here, an estimated 2.5 million worn parts, known as cores, will be processed by 2025, scaling up to 8 million by 2030. These cores will support the facility’s remanufacturing and recycling efforts.
  • Vehicle Reconditioning: This area focuses on repairing, remanufacturing, and repurposing EVs, preparing them for resale through Stellantis's used-vehicle program.
  • Vehicle Dismantling: This unit handles end-of-life vehicles, with the objective of repurposing components and materials for recycling.

This facility builds on Stellantis's existing environmental initiatives, including a recent partnership with Orano for electric car battery recycling and a potential joint venture with CATL. The Mirafiori plant had previously opened a centre for battery technology in September.

“The Circular Economy Hub brings together a powerhouse of skills and activities aimed at creating a high-performing centre of excellence in Europe,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. “We are industrializing the recovery and sustainable reuse of materials, building new technologies and advanced capabilities as we grow in this area.” Stellantis Chairman John Elkann added: “This additional investment of our company here in Turin demonstrates the commitment of Stellantis to Italy in the context of the evolution of our industry, and also the ability of our communities to renew themselves by building their future.”
