A few months ago, Volkswagen's Commercial Vehicles division unveiled the California Concept camper van with the claim that it was nearly identical to the production version, and as promised, recently captured on prototype photo proves the point.

The VW California has been spotted with Multivan badging, but its pop-up roof reveals that it's more than just a people carrier.

In terms of styling, the front grille is almost identical to the concept, but it has sprouted six new air intakes below the VW badge, which is flanked by full-width LED running lights. The eye is drawn backward by the chrome accent line, below which a charging port confirms plug-in hybrid propulsion. Continue along the door sill and the line dissolves into the sharp taillights, which thankfully avoid the current trend of always being connected.

An accent line from the front doors up counters the closed lines at the rear, and although a white car is rarely flattered by a white background, we have to compliment the designers for hiding the length and height of this all-purpose van so neatly.
