After four decades, the iconic off-roader has been revamped with a sleek matte black finish.

At last year's Japan Mobility Show in November, Toyota made a significant comeback with the Land Cruiser 70. This SUV, originally launched 40 years ago, now features advanced safety systems like Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control. It also boasts a more potent and efficient engine. Commemorating its 40th anniversary and its reintroduction in the Japanese market, Toyota has now unveiled a unique, special edition off-roader based on the Land Cruiser 70.

While specific details are scarce, Toyota is set to showcase this matte black SUV at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon. This model is an adaptation of the revitalized 2024 version, incorporating a blend of visual enhancements and minor hardware improvements, courtesy of Toyota Auto Body. This subsidiary specializes in refining Toyota products. The potential transition of these concept features into customer-available upgrades remains an intriguing prospect.

The vehicle's matte black exterior is a standout feature. However, there's more to it. Enhancements include an added snorkel, a redesigned front bumper with winch support, chrome-accented side mirrors, a roof rack, and more. The black wheels with chrome detailing amplify the rugged appearance, while the modern clear lenses for the turn signals signify the year 2024. The original fender-mounted mirror from the production model has been retained.

Under the hood, there appear to be no mechanical changes. It likely retains the standard 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, delivering 201 horsepower. This power is efficiently distributed to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The special model will be displayed alongside a restored Land Cruiser J40 at the Tokyo Auto Salon, set to welcome visitors starting January 13.
