BYD's response to the Tesla Model Y is slated to hit the market in the first half of this year. Prior to its official launch, specifications for the BYD Sea Lion 07 electric SUV have been unveiled.

BYD introduced the Sea Lion 07 in November at the 2023 Guangzhou International Auto Show. As their inaugural mid-size urban SUV, the Sea Lion 07 is poised to compete with Tesla's highly popular Model Y.

The design of this electric vehicle is overseen by Wolfgang Egger, a former designer for Audi and Lamborghini. Consequently, BYD's new electric SUV incorporates elements from both iconic brands to create a streamlined EV tailored for the modern era.

Part of BYD's Ocean series, the Sea Lion 07 will spearhead a new sub-brand of electric vehicles. With dimensions measuring 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, the Sea Lion 07 is slightly more compact than the recently launched BYD Song L. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y measures 4,760 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, making it a direct competitor in China.

Newly released regulatory information from China's MIIT confirms that the electric SUV's design will adhere to the pre-production version showcased a few months ago.

The data verifies specifications, which include three different powertrain configurations. Two of them will feature a single motor with maximum power outputs of 170 kW or 230 kW. The dual-motor variant comprises a front motor with a maximum power output of 160 kW and a rear motor with 230 kW.

BYD's Sea Lion 07 will boast a panoramic sunroof and is expected to be equipped with an iron phosphate battery, likely BYD's Blade battery.

While pricing details have not yet been disclosed, reports suggest it will be in the range of 200,000 to 260,000 yuan ($28,000 – $35,900). In comparison, Tesla's Model Y is priced between 266,000 and 363,900 yuan ($36,900 – $50,500). BYD is anticipated to officially launch the Sea Lion 07 in the coming months.
