Mercedes-Benz technical chief Markus Schäfer has confirmed that the new baby G-Class will be equipped exclusively with an electric powertrain and thus denied rumours about the development of an internal combustion engine.
Markus Schäfer also told Autocar at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 that the smaller Mercedes G-Class will not utilise the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) developed for the brand's electric cars. Instead, the mini SUV will be based on a different platform that will utilise components from Mercedes' larger rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
The mini electric SUV should be the third model in the G-Class range after the familiar combustion-engined SUV and its electric EQG counterpart. This vehicle is due in 2026 and should compete with SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender 90. Later that year, a full-size EQG will also hit the market.
