The all-wheel-drive supercar was greeted with cheers from the crowd at the Barrett-Jackson auction when the bidding reached seven figures and the hammer fell shortly afterwards.

Former President Donald Trump's personal supercar, a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster, recently sold at auction for $1.1 million. This is well above the price most Diablos fetch when put up for sale (between $350,000 and $500,000 at auction, depending on specification).

The V-12 powered Lamborghini is finished in Blu Le Mans with a black interior. The blue paint had to be specially ordered by the real estate mogul. A small plaque, visible when the driver's door is open, reads "Donald Trump Diablo 1997". The car was not sold by the former president, who let it go in 2002. The seller at the auction was not identified.

The Diablo was a rare car in the US at the time Trump owned it, with only 132 coming to America between 1997 and 1999.

Produced shortly after the legendary Countach, the Diablo was the first Lamborghini produced when Volkswagen had control of the Italian car maker. It featured a naturally aspirated 5.7-litre V12 that made around 500 hp and came with some new technology for Lamborghini at the time, including a new all-wheel-drive system for improved handling and updated fuel injection.

Trump's Diablo had just over 15,300 miles (24,623 kilometres) on it at the time of the auction and appears to be largely stock, with a 5-speed manual transmission and a removable roof panel that gave it the roadster designation.

The auction did not disclose the buyer of the former president's Lamborghini.
