Since the original E34 Touring, including the rare M5, the 5 Series wagon has allowed owners to independently open the rear glass, separate from the tailgate. This feature is especially handy when quickly adding small items to the cargo area without opening the entire tailgate. Unfortunately, this feature is no longer available on the new 5 Series Touring.
"The reason for the rear window not opening separately has to do with the lean, sporty, aerodynamically design of the rear end of the vehicle and the sloping roofline. Including a mechanism for opening the window separately in the tailgate would have been at the expense of interior volume in the trunk area." - said Alexander Schmuck, director of product/technology communications for BMW North America.
As mentioned in our previous report, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring provide a spacious luggage compartment with a capacity that can be expanded from 570 to a maximum of 1,700 liters. Notable features include an automatic tailgate operation and remote unlocking of the rear seat backrest, which can be split in a 40:20:40 configuration from the trunk.
The new BMW 5 Series Touring will be launched in Germany on May 25, 2024, with other markets following in June 2024. In this country, prices start at 61,750 euros for the 520d and go up to 64,350 euros for the all-wheel drive version. The i5 Touring is priced between 72,200 euros (eDrive40) and 101,500 euros (M60 xDrive).
