Toyota has confirmed its plan to launch a new electric vehicle for American drivers. The focus is on a three-row electric SUV tailored to the needs of US consumers. This move signals Toyota's commitment to expanding its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
Toyota, primarily known as the pioneer of the hybrid car with its Prius model, is now setting its sights on EVs. Part of this ambitious plan includes a significant $1.3 billion investment in its Kentucky facility. This factory will serve as a focal point for their future EV productions. Toyota Kentucky hosts nearly 9,400 employees and stands as the company's flagship manufacturing site in the USA.
Kerry Creech, President of Toyota Kentucky, highlighted the importance of this development. He said, "Today's announcement reflects our commitment to vehicle electrification and further reinvesting in our US operations. Generations of our team members helped prepare for this opportunity, and we will continue leading the charge into the future by remaining true to who we are as a company and putting our people first for generations to come."
Aside from building an entirely new three-row electric SUV aimed at US customers, Toyota's plans extend over various facets of electric mobility. The brand intends to create a battery pack assembly line within Kentucky.
In addition to focusing on assembling vehicles, Toyota eyes innovative leaps in battery technology. The company is working towards launching three distinct battery ranges by 2026 aimed at marrying high performance with cost efficiency. One of their most anticipated projects involves developing solid-state batteries. These batteries promise potential quick charging capabilities that could revolutionize how electric vehicles power up.
The current flagship EV from Toyota, the bZ4X SUV, can charge from 10% to 80% in 32 minutes. The company is also working on its first solid-state batteries, which have the potential to charge an EV from 10 to 80 percent in just 10 minutes.
Toyota also underlined its intention to support global markets with different products; earlier announcements mentioned an Urban SUV concept destined for European streets later this year.
To support these innovations beyond vehicle manufacturing, Toyota also runs a separate manufacturing plant in North Carolina dedicated solely to batteries production.
