BYD has started a feasibility study on setting up a plant in Mexico to export electric vehicles to the US.
Leading Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD is in talks to build a plant in Mexico, Nikkei Asia reported, citing the head of the company's representative office in Mexico.
The publication specifies that BYD is consulting with Mexican officials on terms, including the plant's location.
“Overseas production is indispensable for an international brand”, BYD Mexico country manager Zhou Zou told Nikkei.
BYD's main production facilities are currently concentrated in China. The automaker plans to open a plant in Thailand later this year. BYD is also building a plant in Hungary for expansion into Europe. Another BYD car plant will be located in Brazil on the site of a closed Ford facility.
