The Google Maps app for Android and iOS can now show navigation updates on your smartphone's lock screen.

This Google Maps feature allows you to track your progress to your destination from the route overview without having to press the start navigation button. As you move, your location and estimated time of arrival on the map will be updated with your speed and alternative route choices.

The best part is that as Google has stated, some of this navigation data will appear on the lock screen. So you won't have to waste time unlocking your phone and opening Google Maps to see where you should go next.

The Google Maps update is already available for Android and iOS.

To enable the new routes feature, you need to open the Google Maps app and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, you should tap "Settings" and scroll down a bit to find "Navigation Settings".

In this last menu, scroll down again until you see the subheading "Glanceable direction while navigating". Switch this on and you'll activate the new route view feature. The developers warn that some of your navigation data will be collected for "map enhancement".
