The design capacity of the battery gigafactory in Somerset County is 40 GWh.

Agratas, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has confirmed that it will build a battery gigafactory at the Gravity Smart campus near Bridgewater. A separate plot of land has been earmarked for the ventures.

With a design capacity of 40GWh, it will be the largest battery factory in the country. By the early 2030s, it will supply almost half of the projected cell requirements for the UK automotive sector.

The plant will directly support up to 4,000 new jobs. An additional "thousands" of UK jobs will come from the supply chain. As well as batteries for electric vehicles, it will manufacture batteries for two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and commercial energy storage.

Preparatory work is now underway on the land plot. In spring, it is planned to start laying piles for the foundation of the plant. Construction will take place in phases, which will enable production to start as early as 2026. JLR and Tata Motors will be Agratas' first customers.
