The French company will offer an electric car and a model with a hybrid powertrain in each segment.

Renault is adjusting plans to electrify its model range and move away from internal combustion engines. While back in 2022, group CEO Luca de Meo said that by the end of the decade Renault's European line-up would probably consist exclusively of electric vehicles, the manufacturer now intends to combine electric and internal combustion engine models.

The two-legged strategy was revealed by Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive. Speaking to Automotive News Europe at the Geneva Motor Show, he said that models such as the new Renault 5 EV will be sold alongside the Clio with an internal combustion engine. This is despite both models representing the same compact car segment.

"For me, the question is not [going EV-only in] 2030 – we will follow the trends with two very competitive offers in our lineup, on both legs," said Cambolive.

Renault isn't the only one adjusting its electric car expectations. Last week, Mercedes-Benz dropped its prediction that it would sell only electric models by 2030. Instead, the company expects electrified vehicles (including hybrids) to account for only 50 per cent of total sales in 2030.
