FedEx Express Europe has taken delivery of the first of 33 new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans to be added to its ground operations in Spain over the coming months.
The 3.5-tonne all-electric vehicles have been allocated to FedEx Express stations in Madrid and Barcelona. Sixteen electric vehicles are already picking up and delivering parcels in the centre of Madrid, and 17 will soon be on the road in Barcelona.
A total of 33 charging points will be installed at both sites, powered by certified renewable energy, and a dynamic power management solution will ensure that the entire fleet of electric vehicles can be charged overnight.
In March 2021, FedEx announced a goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations globally by 2040, with the phased electrification of its own parcel pick-up and delivery fleet a key part of the roadmap.
In line with FedEx's approach to sustainability, the new vehicles will allow diesel vehicles that still have a useful lifespan to be redistributed in the fleet and older vehicles to be retired completely.
Elsewhere in Europe, FedEx Express has already added 23 of the same electric vehicles to its operations in London, UK, 12 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and 28 in the Paris area, France.
