Ford announces extra charges for several exterior colors on the 2024 Mustang, departing from their prior policy of offering these options for free.

Effective now, customers will have to pay additional fees for most color options beyond the four basic no-cost ones: Shadow Black, Oxford White, Iconic Silver Metallic, and Carbonized Gray Metallic.

Cars Direct reported that a bulletin was sent to Ford dealers on April 8, indicating a price change for exterior paint options. This update is now reflected in Ford's online configurator, showcasing the new pricing structure.

Under the new pricing regime, colors like Atlas Blue Metallic, Race Red, Grabber Blue Metallic, and Vapor Blue Metallic will see a charge of $295. Dark Matter Gray Metallic will cost $495. However, prices for Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Yellow Splash Metallic remain unchanged at $495 and $995 respectively.

When compared to similar practices in the automotive industry, Ford's approach with the Mustang is somewhat moderate. For instance, BMW charges $650 for nearly all colors except black and white on its 4 Series models. Nissan offers two free colors for the Z model including Rosewood Metallic. Chevrolet provides nine free color options for the Corvette Stingray including multiple grays along with Riptide Blue, and Torch Red.

A unique addition to the Mustang lineup is a matte finish option available for all colors. This feature is essentially a paint protection film which adds another layer of customization at a cost of $5,995.
