After announcing the retirement of the hydraulic version of Atlas on Tuesday, Boston Dynamics hinted that they were not finished with humanoid robots. As expected, the company has now revealed an all-electric model.

This newer version is hailed as the world’s most dynamic humanoid robot, featuring a sleek design with a head resembling a ring light.

The electric Atlas stands out with its enhanced capabilities demonstrated vividly in a video released by Boston Dynamics. The robot can flip from a prostrate position to standing, rotate its head and torso 180 degrees, showing remarkable balance and flexibility. These features are part of its design to exceed human abilities in task completion.

Hyundai, the parent company of Boston Dynamics, plans to integrate this next-generation technology into automotive manufacturing. Testing will initially involve a select group of partners, focusing on equipping the new Atlas with gripper systems for various commercial needs — marking an intent to commercialize humanoid robots.

Boston Dynamics also explained their strategy behind reshaping robotic movements to be more efficient rather than mimicking human motion exactly. As outlined in their blog post: "Atlas may resemble a human form factor, but we are equipping the robot to move in the most efficient way possible ... combining decades of practical experience we are confident in our ability to deliver a robot uniquely capable of tackling dull, dirty and dangerous tasks."

Boston Dynamics has been developing robots with this form factor for over a decade, longer than most competitors. Currently, it may be the best positioned to introduce humanoid robots into workplaces and homes. However, before that, you may see videos featuring the electric Atlas showcasing some impressive dance moves.
