The new Ram 1200, set to hit the Mexican market next month, stands as a vivid example of badge engineering, sharing its roots with the Changan Kaicene F70 from China.

Despite bearing the Ram badge, this mid-size truck closely resembles its cousins, the Peugeot Landtrek and Fiat Titano, all under the Stellantis umbrella.

Badge engineering has become more prevalent in the automotive world. For instance, while marketed under the American brand Ram, the 1200 is essentially built on a Chinese platform developed by Changan Automobile and previously by PSA Group before they merged into Stellantis. This strategic move showcases how global collaborations are reshaping car brands and models.

The Ram 1200 boasts a turbocharged 2.4-liter gasoline engine that delivers 207 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The truck mainly features a 4x2 drivetrain setup but offers a 4x4 option in the high-end Laramie model.

This truck is available in both single and double cab configurations across various trim levels including Tradesman, Bighorn, and Laramie. Each model varies in capacity; for example, the base model can load up to 2,645 pounds and tow approximately 6,614 lbs. These specifications position it as competitive against established names like the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Frontier.

Interestingly, while Stellantis will launch this vehicle only in Mexico with prices ranging from about $26,600 to $40,000, it does not plan to offer it in the United States.
