Stellantis announced plans to ramp up its production capabilities in Italy, aiming to manufacture hybrid models of the Fiat 500 and Jeep Compass. The initiative will take place at the Mirafiori and Melfi factories, with the Fiat 500 hybrid's production slated to start in the first quarter of 2026.

According to Stellantis, the Mirafiori factory will begin producing the Fiat 500 Hybrid model starting in early 2026. Currently, this factory is known for producing the electric 500e; however, there's been a slowdown in sales growth, prompting this new strategic move. Additionally, the Melfi plant is set to produce the Jeep Compass Hybrid as part of a broader effort to enhance both production levels and model appeal across their range.

From a workforce perspective, Stelliantis is looking at rejuvenating its employee base by hiring younger workers at Mirafiori. These efforts are supported by other facilities like the Termoli plant and Mirafiori’s own e-DCT transmissions division which are integral to Stellantis’ long-term strategy.

The decision comes after months of disputes between the carmaker and local union representatives, who have been pushing the carmaker to increase production in the country. The announcement may also help ease simmering tensions between Stellantis and the Italian government.

Last week, Italian authorities seized 134 Fiat Topolinos at the Port of Livorno. This action was deemed necessary because the cars featured small Italian flags but were manufactured in Morocco. This incident followed a dispute that led Alfa Romeo to rename their SUV from Milano to Junior.
