Hyundai Inster is a miniature electric crossover. Its single electric motor develops 97 or 115 hp depending on the version, and the WLTP range is 300 or 355 kilometres.

The Hyundai Inster is based on the Hyundai Casper with an internal combustion engine. However, unlike the Casper, which is available exclusively in South Korea, the Inster will also be sold in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, making it a global model.

Dimensions

The Inster borrows a lot from the Casper's design, but adds a few electric features. And it's also 230mm longer and has a 180mm longer wheelbase. The Hyundai Inster is 3,825 mm long, 1,610 mm wide, 1,575 mm high and the distance between the front and rear axle is 2,580 mm. Thus it is even smaller than the Chevrolet Bolt / Opel Ampera-e.

Interior

The interior design is also largely borrowed from its combustion engine counterpart, albeit with technological updates and several variants of fabric upholstery colour. The electric car features two 10.25-inch displays. Depending on the equipment list may include a wireless charging dock, 64-colour LED lighting, heated front seats, sunroof and a suite of active safety features.

All seats (including the driver's seat) can be folded down. Boot capacity is 280 litres in the standard second row seating position and increases to 351 litres when the seats are pushed forward.

Powertrain specifications and battery

The Hyundai Inster will be available in standard and extended range versions. The entry-level model is powered by a single electric motor with 97 hp (71 kW) and 147 Nm of torque. Power comes from a 42 kWh battery pack, allowing it to travel more than 300 kilometres without recharging.

The Long Range version is equipped with a 115 hp (84.5 kW) electric motor. The battery capacity increases to 49 kWh, giving a range of 355 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.

With 120kW DC fast charging capability, the Inster can charge from 10 to 80% in just 30 minutes. When plugged into a more commonly used 11kW AC outlet, a full charge will take 4 hours for the standard version or 4 hours 35 minutes for the Long Range version. In addition, the V2L feature provides two-way charging for external devices in case of camping or power problems at home.

Sales

The new Hyundai Inster will be publicly unveiled at the Busan 2024 International Motor Show. The electric car will go on sale in its home country of South Korea in the summer. This will be followed by a gradual rollout in Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Unfortunately, pricing has yet to be revealed. But judging by its size and market positioning, it's likely to be Hyundai's least expensive electric car yet.
