Geely has introduced a new lithium-iron-phosphate battery for electric vehicles. This battery can last for 1 million kilometers (over 620,000 miles) and up to 50 years. It charges faster, works better in cold conditions, and is very durable.

Known as the Aegis Short Blade Battery, the battery has improved safety and energy density. It uses special electrode materials to reduce chemical reactions inside, which helps it last longer. It can be charged 3,500 times, equivalent to 1 million kilometers, with minimal impact on its range. This extended life is expected to increase the value of second-hand EVs and reduce carbon emissions by over 80,000 tons a year.

The cell has a capacity of 192 Wh/kg and is about 40% shorter than traditional blade batteries. It charges faster: from 10-80% in 17 minutes and 4 seconds, compared to 26 minutes for the long-blade battery. In cold conditions, it retains more capacity than the long blade.

Safety features are a key highlight. If punctured, an aluminum foil layer creates an insulating layer to prevent short circuits and thermal events. Tests included puncturing with steel needles, shooting with a bullet, immersion in seawater, fire exposure, extreme cold, side impacts, being squished by 26 tons, and scraping. The battery passed all tests without issues.

The new Aegis Short Blade Battery will first be used in Geely's Galaxy series of E5 all-electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) model.
