Consumer Reports conducts tests at its Connecticut track, evaluating performance, range, quality, and comfort. EVs are additionally scored on a 100-mile highway loop. Some models fell short of their advertised range by up to 50 miles, while others exceeded expectations. The organization also surveys its members on reliability, finding that many EVs, particularly first-year models, often fall short.
Only 14 out of about 50 tested models made the list, indicating that EVs still have significant room for improvement. Automakers must also better educate buyers on factors affecting real-world range, charging times, and maintenance needs, as many believe they will achieve the full advertised range and that EVs require no regular maintenance.
