Toyota is joining the Ionna charging consortium, backed by BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, and Stellantis. This move grants Toyota and Lexus owners access to Ionna charging stations, set to open later this year.

Seven automakers launched the Ionna charging network last summer, and Toyota now becomes an investor and founding partner. This consortium aims to rival Tesla’s Supercharger Network, which faced significant cuts earlier this year.

The first Ionna charging stations are scheduled to open later this year, with plans to install at least 30,000 charging ports in North America by 2030. These stations will feature both CCS and NACS connectors, ensuring compatibility with existing EVs without needing adaptors as the industry shifts to the NACS standard.

Toyota and Lexus customers will benefit from the latest DC fast charging network through this partnership. While specific details are sparse, Ionna promises a "holistic customer experience" with amenities and conveniences at their charging stations.

Currently, Toyota and Lexus offer only two EVs, but two three-row crossovers are in the pipeline. The companies also plan to offer 30 EVs globally by 2030.

Toyota Motor North America CEO Ted Ogawa stated, “We are excited to announce our support of Ionna to deploy DC fast chargers throughout the U.S. and Canada. We believe this will not only promote the adoption of BEVs and increase customer confidence in the technology, but it will provide our Toyota and Lexus customers with access to Ionna’s rapidly growing charging network in North America.”
