BMW is calling back over 100,000 cars because of a motor problem that might make them overheat. In rare cases, this could even start a fire.

The company has to fix 105,588 vehicles. They think about 1% of these cars have the defect. The recall comes after BMW found out that some cars might have mechanical damage to their engines.

This damage can cause a few problems. Cars might not start, or if drivers keep trying to start them, the engine could overheat. In the worst case, if oil leaks onto hot parts, it could catch fire.

The recall covers several BMW models made between 2019 and 2021. These include the X5 and X7 from 2019-2020, the 2020 3 Series Sedan, X6, and 8 Series cars, and the 7 Series Sedan from 2020-2021. BMW has put out a full list online for owners to check.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to a local BMW dealer. The dealer will update the software, free of charge, to fix the issue.

BMW will begin notifying owners of the problem on September 23, 2023. If owners have already fixed the problem before receiving the recall notice, they may be eligible for reimbursement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned the recall an ID number: 24V576.

Car owners shouldn't panic, but they should take this recall seriously. It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to potential car problems.
