ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging network operator in the U.S., is rolling out a new plug that works with most battery-powered cars.

The new plug, called Omni Port, combines the most commonly used connector types into a single unit. It'll be available on both ChargePoint's AC and DC chargers and will work with vehicles using CCS and NACS connectors.

Rick Wilmer, ChargePoint's Chief Executive Officer, said:

"With Omni Port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience."

Omni Port aims to make charging easier for EV owners. People who use the ChargePoint app will just need to input their vehicle's make and model, tap to charge, and the station will automatically release the right connector. Those who don't use the app can pick the correct connector on the charger screen.

ChargePoint explained how Omni Port works:

"Drivers can expect a frictionless charging experience when using Omni Port, simply needing to enter their vehicle's make and model into the ChargePoint app, tapping to charge, and allowing the charging station to automatically release the correct connector type. For those who do not use the ChargePoint app, a driver simply selects the correct connector on the charger screen. Omni Port eliminates the hassle of carrying adapters while forming a simpler, more convenient charging experience."

The new system gets rid of the need for adapters and makes charging more straightforward. It's made to work with all types of vehicles and has cable management that can reach the charge port no matter where it's located on the car. Users don't have to download an app if they prefer to pay by credit card. Omni Port also fully supports vehicles with 800 volt architecture, making sure they can charge at top speeds for long periods.

This move comes as the EV charging industry faces a lack of a single, standard plug. Right now, many EVs use the Combined Charging Standard (CCS), but Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) is gaining ground. Big automakers like Ford, General Motors, and Rivian are switching from CCS to NACS to use Tesla's charging network, which many see as the most reliable.

ChargePoint's Omni Port looks to bridge this gap, offering a solution that works for all EV owners regardless of their car's charging standard.
