Ford is shaking things up with its iconic Mustang lineup. The American automaker has dropped hints about new Mustang variants during a recent dealer meeting in Las Vegas.

Ford executives teased dealers with the idea of a four-door Mustang coupe and an off-road version. Auto News is reporting, these new models could join other special editions in an expanded Mustang portfolio.

The four-door coupe might be called the Mach-4, following the naming convention of the electric Mach-E. Ford's been toying with this idea for a while. Back in 2022, they quietly released a sketch of a sleek sports sedan. More recently, Ford CEO Jim Farley said a four-door coupe could work if it stayed true to the original Mustang's performance and attitude.

But that's not all. Ford also showed off plans for a rugged Mustang. Picture a lifted Mustang with big, meaty tires - that's what they're going for. This off-road Baja model could even come with all-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive isn't out of the question.

Ford's not stopping there. They're cooking up some special versions too. One's an EcoBoost Mustang modified by RTR, expected to cost around $40,000. Another's a high-performance convertible with a V8 engine and manual transmission. It'll be similar to the GT350 or GT500, but without the Shelby badging.

These new ideas aren't coming out of nowhere. Other car makers have had success with similar concepts. Porsche's 911 Dakar and Lamborghini's Huracan Sterrato have both been hits. Ford's already dipped its toes in these waters with the Mustang Mach-E Rally.

When will we see these new Mustangs on the road? Ford's keeping that under wraps for now. But a Ford spokesperson told Auto News they have "very exciting plans to expand our portfolio with new vehicles at all price points."

It looks like the Mustang stable is about to get a lot more diverse. Ford's betting big on its pony car, and only time will tell if these new variants will gallop to success.
