Acura's got big plans for sports car fans. The company's working on a new electric vehicle to take over from the NSX. They're aiming to launch it in 2027 or 2028.

Shinji Aoyama, Acura's global executive vice president, shared the news during Monterey Car Week. He said:

"We are going to introduce a [new] sports model in 2027 or 2028… We may not call it an NSX, but it's kind of an NSX-type of vehicle"

This announcement comes a year after Acura teased us with their Electric Vision Design Study. Back then, they just showed a shape without any details about the engine or production plans.

The previous NSX stopped production in 2022. Some car enthusiasts thought its hybrid engine was too complicated. Since then, people have been guessing about what might come next.

Acura's taking a different approach with this new car. They're focusing on making it thin and light. Aoyama explained:

"Our development approach for this new 0 Series [car] is thin and light. So this means, basically, how to make the platform thinner than other existing vehicles. So even [with battery dimensions], we are trying to make a thinner vehicle. So that we can realize a lower-height vehicle. This means that we can realize a larger [cabin], as well."

This strategy could help solve a big problem in the electric car world. Many car makers are struggling to keep their electric vehicles from getting too heavy. For example, the latest BMW M5 weighs as much as a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

By focusing on keeping things thin and light, Acura wants to make a car that's fun to drive and has plenty of space inside. They're also hoping to make the car lower to the ground than other electric vehicles.

We'll have to wait a few years to see the final product, but it looks like Acura's got something exciting in the works.
