The current Charger is a favorite among U.S. police departments. It's the only four-door sedan made for police use. Now, Dodge is getting ready to replace both the two-door Challenger and four-door Charger with a new, eighth-generation model.
Dodge Law's Instagram account shared a teaser image of the Charger Daytona EV in classic black-and-white police colors. The car sports strobe lights on the roof and "to protect and to serve" written on the hood. Dodge's post reads, "Surely you didn't think we'd forget about a legend. Stay tuned for more details." They also noted it's a concept model not available for purchase yet.
The new Charger will come in two-door and four-door versions. The two-door model will be out for the 2024 model year, while the four-door, which makes more sense for police use, will follow in 2025. Interestingly, the new design is technically a hatchback, so police versions will need a divider to block access to the cargo area.
For power, the electric Charger Daytona will use dual electric motors. It'll offer between 456 and 670 horsepower, depending on the version. The most efficient model should be able to go about 317 miles on a single charge.
There's also talk of a gas-powered version called the Charger Sixpack. It might have a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 420 to 550 horsepower.
According to Mopar Insider, the new concept could make its debut at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference and Exposition in Boston, October 19-22.
