The company introduced the Prime name back in 2017 with the Prius Prime, which was based on the fourth-generation Prius. The RAV4 Prime followed in 2019, boasting 302 combined horsepower and a quick 5.5-second 0-60 time.
Toyota explained the change in a statement:
"The switch to the RAV4 Plug-in name is intended to help consumers more easily identify the powertrain choices among RAV4 models."
The company believes the Prime name made it hard for shoppers to understand what they were getting. The new naming scheme will make it easier for people to tell the difference between powertrain options without having to search online.
Along with the name change, Toyota will remove the blue 'halo' from its logo on the front and rear of these vehicles.
The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid won't see any changes aside from the new badging. It will keep its standard all-wheel drive, estimated 42-mile electric range, and 38 mpg combined fuel efficiency in hybrid mode.
The 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid will also continue with the same specs as the previous Prime model. It'll still have 220 horsepower, a 44-mile electric range, and up to 52 mpg combined, depending on wheel size.
