Ford's CEO told CAR magazine why the Blue Oval has dropped popular models like the Fiesta, Focus and Fusion/Mondeo.

When Ford killed the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus a few years ago, people were surprised. The Fiesta and Mondeo were also phased out in Europe, with the Focus to be retired in 2025. Why is Ford getting rid of its cars? It's "getting out of the boring-car business and into the iconic-vehicle business."

In a recent interview with Britain's CAR magazine, CEO Jim Farley admitted that those cars were loved by many customers. The head honcho from Dearborn says it's not worth investing more money in cars like the Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo.

There won't be new versions of those cars. Instead, Ford plans to launch a couple of Volkswagen-based electric SUVs. The Explorer and Capri are based on the MEB platform and are related to the ID.4 and ID.5. The Puma crossover is getting an electric version.

As for the "iconic" vehicles, Farley was talking about the Bronco, Mustang, and Raptor. He thinks the Mustang can compete with Porsche. Ford plans to invest more in the Mustang to make it happen. The GTD is proof of that. The top brass explained that enthusiast vehicles have always been a side business. They're now becoming the company's main focus.
