Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) will use Tesla's charging standard for its new electric cars. The company made this decision before launching its Afeela brand in the US in 2025 and Japan in 2026.

SHM signed a deal with Tesla to use the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for Afeela cars. This makes SHM the first company in Japan to use NACS. The agreement lets Afeela owners use Tesla's V3 and V4 Superchargers.

Afeela is a joint effort between Sony and Honda to make electric cars. They plan to start taking orders in the US in the first half of 2025. Sales will begin later that year, with the first cars reaching customers in spring 2026. Japan will see Afeela cars in the second half of 2026.

Tesla created NACS as its own charging system for electric cars in North America. Tesla released the design of  its Supercharger connector in November 2022. At the end of 2023, it became a standard charging system known as SAE J3400. Other car makers started using it a few months later.

Many car companies decided to use NACS because there are so many Tesla Superchargers in North America. Some brands have already started using US Superchargers, but it's still early days.

While Afeela will be the first to sell NACS cars in Japan, other Japanese car makers like Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Subaru, and Mazda will use NACS only for their cars sold in North America.
