Donald Trump wants to slap a huge tax on cars made in Mexico. He says he'll do it if he wins the presidential election next month.

The former president told a crowd in Wisconsin he'd put a 200% tax on Mexican-built vehicles. That's double what he said before. It would be the biggest tax like this in U.S. history.

Last year, Mexico sent about 3 million cars to the U.S. Big companies like GM, Ford, and Stellantis build a lot of cars there.

At the rally, Trump said:

"We'll put a tariff of 200% on if we have to. We're not going to let it happen. We're not letting those cars come into the United States."

Trump said he wants to bring more jobs to the U.S. He thinks this will make foreign companies build their factories in the U.S. instead of other countries. He wrote about his plan in Newsweek:

"Under my plan, American workers will no longer be worried about losing their jobs to foreign nations. Instead, foreign nations will be worried about losing their jobs to Americans. German car companies can become American car companies. We can beat China in electronic production. Manufacturers that have left us will come sprinting back to our shores."

Trump says he'll offer the lowest taxes, cheapest energy, and fewer rules for businesses. But there's a catch - they have to make their stuff in America and hire American workers.

Some experts worry this plan could make cars cost more. The Tax Policy Center says it won't just be new cars that get more expensive. Used cars might cost more too.
