The Cybertruck cost over $132,000, with about $111,000 for the base vehicle and $21,000 for modifications. Unplugged Performance and Whelen Engineering customized the truck with police graphics, emergency lights, and a special interior.
Police Chief Michael Kent explained why they chose such an unusual vehicle:
"Whether it's a lowered or raised truck, a PT Cruiser or a Cybertruck, these vehicles draw a crowd with custom graphics and features that pique the curiosity of car enthusiasts of all ages. I'm very proud to say that we're the first police department in the country to have this in its fleet."
Kent believes the Cybertruck will help start important conversations with young people about drug abuse. He said, "It's those conversations that cannot be quantified because they're truly priceless."
The public has mixed feelings about the expensive purchase. Some critics on Instagram called it a "waste of money" and an example of why people want to "defund the police." They pointed out that a PT Cruiser would have cost about $122,000 less.
But the Cybertruck also has supporters. One citizen commented, "If it can turn a kid from bad to good, it is worth it!!"
The debate continues over whether the Cybertruck will prove to be a good investment for the DARE program or if it's too costly for taxpayers. Only time will tell if the futuristic vehicle will make a real difference in drug abuse education efforts.
