BMW will build 50 Skytop roadsters. The luxury carmaker announced the limited production run, responding to high demand from VIP customers.

The Skytop started as a design study at the 2024 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. BMW didn't reveal the price, but all 50 units are already sold out. The company hasn't specified which markets will get the car.

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group design chief, expressed his excitement about the project:

"The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level. To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true. Thank you for the very positive response around the globe and to the passionate team that worked on the project."

The Skytop is a targa-style roadster inspired by the BMW Z8 and 503 coupe. It features BMW's signature shark-nose front and a flowing rear. An aluminum spine runs from the hood to the trunk, and the car has no door handles. Instead, it uses subtle winglets. The designers also created custom thin LED lights for the Skytop.

BMW based the Skytop on the 8-Series. It has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 617 horsepower. The car uses an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds.

The concept version had hand-stitched reddish-brown leather with intricate brogue detailing. The production model will include a head-up display and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

This isn't BMW's first ultra-limited production run. In 2022, they made 50 units of the BMW 3.0 CSL, which originally cost about $820,000. Some of those cars have since sold for up to $1.35 million. The Skytop will likely follow a similar price trajectory.
