Toyota started making cars at Burnaston back in 1989. Since then, they've put €3.25 billion into the plant. Now, it only makes hybrid cars. In fact, it was the first Toyota factory outside Japan to build hybrids.
Darius Mikolajczak, the managing director, said:
"This milestone represents more than just a numerical achievement. It reflects our contribution to the economy and our commitment to making ever-better cars, embracing new technologies, and building strong relationships with our suppliers, partners, and local communities. This success is a testament to the dedication of all our members, past and present."
The Corolla is a big deal for Toyota. They've sold over 50 million of them worldwide. The car that rolled off the line at Burnaston is part of the 12th generation of Corolla.
Toyota's UK operations are important for the company. They started in 1992 and were Toyota's first production facilities in Europe. Besides the Burnaston plant, there's also an engine plant in Deeside, North Wales.
These UK facilities employ about 3,000 people directly. They also support thousands more jobs in the supply chain. About 85% of the cars made here get sent to other countries, mainly in the European Union and other European markets.
