Only 16 examples of this coveted road-going Jaguar exist, making it one of the most sought-after models from the British manufacturer. The specific car up for auction, chassis XKD 540, started life as a Short Nose D-Type before undergoing a transformation in 1958 at Jaguar's own facility.
Phil Scragg ordered the conversion for hill climbing purposes. The car got some upgrades during this process. Workers added a full-height windshield and a passenger door. They also swapped out the original 3.4L engine for a more powerful 3.8L unit.
Despite these modifications, the XKSS still has its matching-numbers monocoque chassis and front sub-frame. The auction lot will include spare headlights and wheels, adding to its appeal for collectors. The car's estimated value reaches a whopping $14,500,000 USD.

The car's history is as impressive as its specs. After Scragg's initial ownership in the UK, it made its way to Australia in 1962. There, racers Laurie O'Neill and Colin Hyams took turns behind the wheel. The XKSS also participated in the prestigious Mille Miglia Storica event.
Over the years, the car has received expert care. Both Pearsons Engineering and CKL Developments have carried out restoration work, ensuring the XKSS remains in top condition.
For potential buyers wanting a closer look, there's a video of Chris Harris driving this very XKSS through the streets of London. The footage will give bidders a taste of what it's like to own and drive such a rare piece of automotive history.
RM Sotheby's expects fierce competition for this exceptional Jaguar when it hits the auction block in November. Car enthusiasts and collectors will have a chance to own a piece of automotive royalty, with a price tag to match its regal status.
