Volvo FM and Volvo FH, the brand's best-selling models, have been awarded the highest marks in the debut Euro NCAP heavy truck test. The Volvo FM stood out as the best performer among all the models tested. Both trucks also received the City Safe award for safety in urban areas.
What was tested?
Euro NCAP assessed three key aspects:
- Driving safety: driver monitoring, visibility (direct and indirect) and assistance systems such as the speed limiter.
- Collision avoidance: analysing frontal crashes, pedestrian and cyclist incidents, and low speed or lane departure collisions.
- Post-crash actions: availability of rescue information.
Compliance with City Safe, which protects vulnerable road users, and excellent active safety made the Volvo FM and FH the top performers in the test.
Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, said the results confirm Volvo's leadership in safety. Anna Wrige Berling, Volvo Trucks' Chief Safety Officer, added that the company is working to stay ahead of the legal requirements for safety.
The context of Euro NCAP testing
The Euro NCAP vehicle safety assessment programme has been in place since 1996. Since then, the programme has become a standard for passenger cars and is now being extended to heavy trucks. In the future, there are plans to add crash tests and assessments of different vehicle segments.
